Chelsea's Michael Essien will be out for "several months" after suffering a knee injury on national team duty with Ghana's World Cup qualifier against Libya. The injury looked serious as he wept while he was taken off. An examination by club medics revealed the extent of the damage, which can keep players out of action for up to a year.
The 25-year-old midfielder, who has eight goals in 43 international appearances, left in the 22nd minute of Ghana's 1-0 loss at Libya last Friday. He has been with Chelsea since 2005.
A statement on Chelsea's official website read: "Michael Essien suffered a knee injury playing for Ghana on Friday.
"He has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo an operation as soon as the majority of the swelling has subsided. We expect this to happen in a week's time.
"In the meantime Michael has started rehab in the aqua therapy centre at Cobham which will improve the condition of the knee prior to surgery. A return to full fitness is not expected for several months."
Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari can still select from Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, Michael Ballack and Deco in central midfield.
