Tottenham Interested in Signing Ruud van Nistelrooy

Harry Redknapp, the Tottenham manager, is considering a move for the Real Madrid forward, who is seen as surplus to requirements.

Van Nistelrooy turns 33 next month and has only recently returned to light training following surgery on his right knee.

Redknapp believes that, with Darren Bent and Roman Pavlyuchenko set to leave White Hart Lane, Van Nistelrooy’s Premier League experience could prove vital.

Wigan’s Paul Scharner is also attracting interest from Spurs and Fulham, along with Everton. The Austrian midfielder admitted: "Tottenham, Everton and Fulham are interested in me, just like Hertha (Berlin) and Hamburg. I would prefer to stay in England."

Former Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric, has told the club’s new owner Sulaiman Al Fahim that they could worse than taking Redknapp back to Fratton Park for a third time. Now at Leicester, Mandaric said: "You've got to do the right thing and if bringing Harry to the club is what he needs to do, that is what he has to do."

Meanwhile, Spurs’ Mexican forward Giovani dos Santos could be set for a return to Spain, with Espanyol.

Dimitar Berbatov Joins Manchester United for £30.75 million

Sir Alex Ferguson believes Dimitar Berbatov will give Manchester United's attack a "new and exciting dimension" this season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo sidelined through injury, Ferguson is relieved to have finally recruited Berbatov, whose touch, vision and presence seems likely to complement the more dynamic talents of Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez.

The Bulgarian has been a long-term target of the double-winners, who had an approach rebuffed last season. They reignited their interest this summer, as they looked to complete their striking options up front.

"This is a key signing," said Ferguson after United agreed to pay Tottenham £30.75 million for Berbatov. "Dimitar is one of the best and most exciting strikers in world football. His style and ability will give the team a different dimension and I am sure he will be a popular player with the fans."

Ferguson's personal intervention was understood to have played a crucial role in the dramatic climax to United's long-running pursuit of Berbatov.

The deal was under severe doubt after Tottenham agreed a fee with Manchester City. But Ferguson drove Berbatov away from Manchester airport in his Bentley and eventually ensured the Bulgarian signed a four-year deal at Old Trafford.

"Joining Manchester United is a dream come true for me," said the 27-year-old forward.

"I look forward to playing my part in helping this club win more honours in the years to come."

Berbatov, 27, agreed to a four-year contract with United and Tottenham confirmed the deal on their website 45 minutes after the transfer window shut.

United submitted papers to the Premier League 40 minutes before the midnight deadline. The deal, which will see Fraizer Campbell move in the other direction on a season-long loan, was duly confirmed at 12.40am.

The fee is more than United had originally seemed willing to pay, chiefly because of City's audacious bid to sign the player yesterday afternoon.

Daniel Levy, the Tottenham chairman, had reportedly agreed a deal of £35 million deal with City. But Berbatov's insistence on joining United, and the increased bid from Old Trafford, eventually allowed Ferguson to claim a small victory over City, in what is set to become a long-drawn out war for supremacy between the two clubs.

Spurs were greatly opposed to their approach for their star player and reported Manchester United to the Football Association accusing them of an illegal approach for the 27-year-old. Nevertheless, they remained at the front of the queue to land their man despite fleeting interest from Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

Tottenham Hotspur Earned a 1-1 Draw Against Chelsea

Tottenham Hotspur earned a 1-1 draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs striker Darren Bent poached a point and ended Chelsea's perfect start to the season.

Chelsea led through Juliano Belletti, but with Roman Pavlyuchenko signed from Spartak Moscow on Saturday, Bent's first goal of the campaign provided a reminder to Juande Ramos of what he can deliver.

Bent capitalised on a fortunate deflection before driving into the far corner just before half-time.

Spurs Bid for Andrei Arshavin Rejected

Tottenham have had a bid for Zenit St Petersburg striker Andrei Arshavin rejected, BBC Sport has learned. It is believed the transfer fee offered for the 27-year-old was below the asking price of about £20m that the Russian club are demanding.

Arshavin is keen to join Juande Ramos' side and is hopeful Spurs will come back with an improved offer. But, it is understood that Tottenham are also considering other options, including Roman Pavlyuchenko.

Spurs are believed to have had initial talks with the £15m-rated Spartak Moscow striker last week, although no deal had been agreed. However, Arshavin's agent Dennis Lachter is still hopeful that his client will be heading to north London. "It is my prediction that Arshavin is going to be a Tottenham player this season," Denis Lachter told BBC Radio Five Live on Thursday. "He just rejected a huge, huge offer to renew his contract for another five years. He would like to leave for the Premier League."

In July, Arshavin's hopes of a dream move to Barcelona collapsed after the Catalan side also failed to meet Zenit's valuation for their prize asset. Arshavin was suspended for Russia's opening two games at Euro 2008, but on his return helped the national team to the semi-finals, scoring two goals en route, while 26-year-old Pavlyuchenko scored three times.

Tottenham Hotspur Completed Signing of David Bentley

Tottenham has completed the capture of Blackburn's England winger David Bentley for a fee that could eventually reach $34 million.

The 23-year-old, who has won six caps for his country, had spent three seasons at Ewood Park, scoring 21 goals in 133 appearances before opting to leave for Spurs for an initial fee of $30 million. The fee could increase, depending on Bentley's performances.

Bentley started his career in north London with Arsenal, but failed to make much of a first-team impact with the Gunners.

He made it clear earlier this summer that he wanted to move on, with Liverpool initially being linked with a move for the talented wideman.

"I made it clear to the club what I wanted to do. The situation is I want to move on. I want to be playing Champions League football or in Europe," Bentley had commented.

"I've been here for three years and I love the club and I love playing for them, but I feel like I've done everything I can.

"I want to move on and try and push up the ladder and push on and try and be as successful as I can be in football and I believe that lies elsewhere.

"I want a new challenge. I believe I have done as much as I can at the club and want to push on somewhere else."
