Hull City Manager Phil Brown Scoops Manager of The Month Award

Phil Brown, manager of newly-promoted Hull City, has been named the Barclays Manager of the Month for September.

It is the first such award for the club as they embark on their first-ever season in the top flight.

The Tigers defied the odds to bounce back from a 5-0 home defeat to Wigan Athletic, to start September in fine style, recording a deserved 2-1 win at Newcastle United as Marlon King scored his first goals for the club.

Brown's men took a valuable point from the home match with Everton, before following this up with a famous 2-1 win away at Arsenal.

The Emirates Stadium was left stunned as a 25-yard Geovanni strike and a Daniel Cousin glancing header saw Hull inflict a first home defeat of the season on the Gunners.

By the end of September, Brown had steered the Tigers to sixth place in the Barclays Premier League having guided his side to victory in the Championship play-off final last May.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Gareth Southgate Won Barclays Manager of the Month Award

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has been named the Barclays Manager of the Month for August.

Boro sit just a single point off Chelsea in the Barclays Premier League after seeing off both Tottenham Hotspur and newly-promoted Stoke City 2-1 at the Riverside Stadium, preserving a perfect home record into September.

In addition, Southgate's men narrowly missed out on securing three points away at Anfield, after an impressive display saw them leading with five minutes remaining, only for an own goal and last-gasp Steven Gerrard strike to rob them of any points.

Southgate joins only Stuart Pearce in achieving the double of winning the Barclays Player and Manager of the Month Awards in their careers, having scooped the player accolade back in January 2000.

He also becomes the first Middlesbrough manager to collect the prize since Terry Venables in January 2001 and it is his first such award since taking up management in 2006.

Southgate played at the top level for Crystal Palace, Aston Villa and Middlesbrough and won the League Cup twice during his playing career.

After winning over 50 England caps and amassing more than 200 appearances as a player at the Riverside, Southgate was appointed as manager in June 2006 following Steve McLaren's departure to manage England.

Deco Won Barclays Player of the Month Award

Chelsea midfielder Deco has capped a dream start to life in England by winning the Barclays Player of the Month Award.

The summer signing from Barcelona has made a big impression in the Barclays Premier League, scoring twice and being credited with a further two assists in just three matches, as the Blues soared to the top of the table and retained their unbeaten record going into September.

Deco's creative talents were first showcased in the 4-0 win over Portsmouth in the season opener at Stamford Bridge, where his assist for Nicolas Anelka's goal was improved by a 25-yard strike to round off the scoring.

In the closely contested 1-0 victory over Wigan Athletic that followed he shone once more, as another long-range strike, this time from a third-minute free-kick, proved the difference. His effectiveness from set pieces continued in the 1-1 home draw with Tottenham Hotspur, where his corner produced the opening goal from a Juliano Belletti flick.

Deco, Luiz Felipe Scolari's debut signing, is the first Chelsea player to scoop the award since Petr Cech back in March 2007, and the only Portuguese player other than Christiano Ronaldo to collect the prize.
