Chelsea have announced midfielder Frank Lampard has signed a new five-year contract at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard has ended speculation surrounding his future after after putting pen to paper on a new long-term deal.
Lampard, 30, had been the subject of summer-long speculation. Rumour was rife that Lampard, whose previous contract was due to expire at the end of the 2008/09 season, was looking to leave Chelsea. He had been linked with a move to Italy with Internazionaleas as former boss Jose Mourinho attempted to lure the England international to Inter Milan. The England international midfielder was the subject of two unsuccessful bids from the Italian champions earlier in the summer, reported to be in the region of £9.75million.
The former West Ham United youngster, who joined the Blues for £11million in 2001, had less than 12 months remaining on his deal after seeing talks on a new contract drag on without agreement throughout last season. "I want to finish my career at Chelsea. It is something I've said many times and after signing this contract I am very happy and positive I will finish as a player here. It has taken a while to get the deal done and there has been a bit of compromise on both sides but I am delighted we have managed to get there. I am really looking forward to the new season under the new manager and with our new players and the current squad there is a great feeling we can build on the successes of the last few years." he told the club's official website.
Lampard has scored 110 goals in 369 appearances for the Blues and new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari was quick to praise the professionalism of the midfielder. The news came as a major boost to new Chelsea boss Luiz Felipe Scolari who has been charged with the task of overhauling Manchester United in the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. He said, "I am delighted that Frank has committed his future to the club. He is a key player for me and vital to Chelsea's future successes. Frank is one of the best professionals I have worked with.
